by Mykie Karstedt – Camden Art Shoppes

Camden is a small town in between nowhere and nowhere pretty much. But like most small towns it has character. And more importantly, it has heart.
To be an artist you have to be able to imagine and make believe many things. You have to believe in things still unseen and have the fortitude to make things happen. You have to dream.
In the 6 months I’ve spent working in Camden I have seen it grow and change and start moving towards bigger things.
New businesses opening, new buildings being built, new people moving to town.
I suppose you could say it’s a town of artists in a way. A town of builders and doers. Of dreamers.
To be an artist you have to see potential. You have to have the eyes to see the possibilities in everything. And not just in projects or plans, but in people too.
I was given the chance to become a part of Camden Art Shoppes from their beginning. I have learned a great many things while working there and spending time in its town and with its people. It is a place of possibilities. To go home to. To start over in. To find yourself, find your voice. And maybe even move on from who you used to be or what happened to you in the past.
To be an artist you have to be comfortable with the ugly stages. The times when you think dear God please don’t let anyone else see this yet. It’s awful.
But that’s the thing about hanging out with a bunch of artists at work all day. They see the potential in everything. They give you ideas and thoughts about what you could do or change. And whether you take their advice or not, it’s nice to know they’re there. As a community, to see your potential when you can’t. To remember that more can be done together. And we can be better than we ever have been before.
I like to think I’ve helped make the shop a better place. That I’ve been part of helping it grow into its full potential. From moving furniture and changing light bulbs to talking with people about art, there is always something to do. More to improve and make better. Another opportunity to see where you yourself can grow and change. Do more. Be more.
So whether you come to Camden to look at art or purchase it, take a class, spend time with your loved ones, meet new people, or if you’re simply returning home after the long journey outward… I truly believe there can be something for everyone here.
Join those who are already here or start something new yourself.
There is space for you here, and we welcome you!
