Artist’s Call

Call for Artists for our second Plein Air competition in Camden, SC, October 12^th 8 am – 5 pm.  Be inspired by the beauty of Camden South Carolina, known for its quaint parks, historic sites and buildings.  Purchase a ticket by Sept 30 for the early bird rate of $35. The fee increases to $45 Oct 1.

This is a juried event. Our judge is Eric LaChance.  He serves as the Sumter County Gallery of Art Curator and Assistant Director.  Eric will award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize.  This year we are adding a Spirit of Camden Award.  This award will be given by Rob and Karen Brown.  Rob and Karen Brown have invested in our iconic downtown through the renovation of several buildings on Broad Street.  Rob spent time in Disney with Construction.  Karen served as a special needs teacher.

This event is during the annual MAD festival.

More on Eric Chance.  Eric has been immersed in the arts for nearly 20 years in various capacities, ranging from restoration to curation. With an academic background in English and literature, and visual art inclinations that span mediums, he is first an avid video maker. A native of Miami, Florida, Eric now calls Sumter home.  He has been an installer with ArtFields since 2019, and in 2024 as guest designer for the TRAX Visual Arts Center and Jones-Carter Gallery. He also recently directed his first play, Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at Sumter Little Theatre.

Many in the Sumter art community will recognize him as the assistant director and curator of the Sumter County Gallery of Art.

Plein Air in Camden, SC

Artists bring a blank canvas between 8 am – 10 am to Camden Art Shoppes at 1011 Broad Street, Camden SC.  The coordinator or designee stamps the blank canvas to qualify the artist for the event.

Artists return with a completed painting and easel to Camden Art Shoppes at 3:30 pm. The art is displayed on the river at 1011 Galleria (1011 Broad Street) and is judged at 4:30.

There will be a light reception.

Dinner in Camden, SC

If you have not been to 1011 Galleria, there is an excellent Mexican restaurant called Saluds. Other restaurants, Sam Kendall’s, B-Colsons, and Steeple Chase, are located within the 1000 block of Broad Street are also excellent choices. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

Camden Art Shoppes, LLC

Camden Art Shoppes is sponsoring the plein air event led by Sharon Funderburk. Your art can be hung at Camden Art Shoppes through the MAD Festival week.  We have several venues in town that our art can be hung for sale for the month of October.  If a customer wants to purchase your painting while displayed in Camden, the sale must go through Camden Art Shoppes.  Camden Art Shoppes will receive 15% of the sale.  If you have any questions, contact sharonfunderburk@yahoo.com.
