Christy Greer, a local painter, enjoys capturing the beauty she sees around her on paper. She works primarily with watercolor and ink, but sometimes enjoys acrylics and photography. She focuses on capturing the feeling of a moment and the essence of a place. Each of her pieces is painted with intention, representing a personal memory, experience or feeling. Christy’s paintings highlight the joy of travel and showcase the beauty of the world around us, both the extraordinary and the everyday. She is especially drawn to old doors, which she views as works of art themselves. The idea of a door also evokes vivid imagery and meaning: a new beginning or a mystery, the passage of time or home sweet home. Because Christy’s paintings always have a story, each piece comes with a tag that shares more details with the viewer.
Christy is a teacher by profession. She has taught in the classroom, homeschooled her four children, taught classes for homeschool co-ops, and most recently helped found a local hybrid school for homeschoolers. Despite not having a career in art, Christy has drawn and painted since she was a child, taking occasional classes through the years to strengthen her skills. Christy has painted murals, sold her work, donated her work to support good causes, and shared her paintings with friends and family. If she is not painting, Christy is most likely found in the kitchen pursuing her other passion–cooking and baking. She loves creating beautiful meals for her family and friends. While Christy loves to travel and see new places, she also enjoys the simple, ordinary days of being at home with her husband and children.
Teaching
I do not currently teach classes or mentor artists, but I may teach art classes for elementary students in the future.
Art Training
I am primarily self-taught, but I have taken a few recreational art classes over the years to help expand my skills and fill in gaps of knowledge.
Inspirations and Influences
The Impressionist painters of the late 1800s and early 1900s, especially Monet, Morisot, Degas, Cassatt and Renoir.
Other (Family, Hobbies, Places Lived)
I am from the DC area but our family moved to South Carolina 10 years ago. We have really enjoyed living here. We live in a more rural setting and appreciate the nature around us. Besides art, my other big hobby is cooking and baking, especially creating nourishing and healthy foods that look beautiful and taste delicious. My husband and I love trying new foods, so I am always experimenting in the kitchen. I have tried everything from fermenting vegetables to making croissants from scratch.
